One of the downsides of winter above the 45th latitude North is that it gets dark so quickly! Plus all the fog and cloud which render the sun invisible for days on end. So here are some houses designed to let in as much light as possible.

I am tempted to go and stay in this last one… See you in Oslo!
In a previous house we built a new kitchen with a vaulted skylight and it was my favourite room in the house – sadly, we moved out fairly soon afterwards.
We’ve been stuck in thick scotch mist for weeks bar one clear day on Sunday so anything with a blue sky appeals to me… thinking San Francisco would be nice AND their bridge works!! X
We’ve had about 2 weeks of fog, with only a day or two of visibility, so am feeling the same way. Mind you, I’m sure if we were to go up the mountain, above the cloud cover, it might be a different story…
Oh, that living room from homedit.com looks absolutely amazing, Marina Sofia! Just gorgeous. And you’re right; there’s something about letting in the light…
I hate the fact that there is so little light at this time of year. It’s why we make such a big thing of Solstice in our house. Even though at first there may be only a minute extra each day from Monday onwards every one of those minutes is precious and is celebrated as such.
Ooh gorgeous! I’d live in any of them. I wish I could overlook the sea or a river, though these days that usually means tangling with floodwaters. Perhaps inhabiting them in imagination is the best of all worlds? Roll on the spring.
I don’t know if it’s the Northern blood, but I actually like the dark winter months – closing the curtains and lighting the lamps and the (pretend) flickering of the fire. In fact, I’m miserable at the moment because it’s too warm! So I’m not overly tempted this week, though the one with the amazing view is pretty amazing!
I’m more than happy to road-test nos 2 & 5 on this list – there is something about vaulted ceilings that really appeals to me!

They’re all gorgeous but I think 1 and 3 appeal most – I’m getting so fed up of going off to work in the dark…
So am I – and with the fog we’ve been having, it stays dark pretty much all day…
Number 1 is quite nice, but most of the others are too stark/minimalist for my tastes. I would prefer something a little more homely!
For some reason, cosy interiors and big windows don’t seem to mix… I’ve noticed that in design magazines!

Ah, alas I’m no longer in the Highlands so can’t put that theory to the test😉
This is very welcome given the seemingly relentless greyness that has us in it’s grip in the west of England. I like the look of numbers 1 or 3.
I detect a slight preference for cosiness there, rather than minimalism, right?
No. 3 is actor Jason Bateman’s old home, which sold for around $2 million recently. Of course, he moved into something bigger…
Cosiness and light are my perfect combination, and so easily affordable!

That’s what I keep telling myself… from the 21st onwards it’s uphill all the way…

Oh, I am so jealous! I want one of these bright rooms with a fabulous view.
Happy Holidays to you and your family. 🙂
