Ask for small commitments first, then, when the large requests come, they will find it impossible to say no.
Last week I cleared out boxes
loft-bound for the longest time.
I found cards and letters
from the days when we preferred them to email
when international phone calls were too expensive
for us scholarship students.
Too few of yours: proof that even then
you favoured silence as a method.
Sheet after sheet of colourful stationery
with my girly, high-pitched scrawl,
giggly, breathless, full of words
to reassure how free you were,
no demands at all.
How I played the game of reasonable
contrast to all those you’d loved before.
Not sensing all the while
the noose tightening around my neck.
Very powerful Marina – that last line is a real sock in the jaw! 🙂
Putting up some of my raw, unfiltered works in which I vented some spleen…
Always good to vent….. 😉
I love it when you vent. Silence on his part since the beginning. I wondet, what did you see in this creep. I wonder indeed, what any of us saw in these creeps before we found our knight. Excellent write.
Ah, the reasons are always complex… But I do usually like writing more balanced and digested versions of poetry.
So do i. But sometimes, you gotta vent.
This really is powerful, Marina Sofia! It captures so well what it’s like to be in that sort of relationship. This one packs a punch.
Digging back through mementos can be revealing. I like it.
Almost as excruciating as my teenage diaries…
Strong stuff! I like when you vent – is it mean of me to hope he reads it? 😉
